Moose Sightings

In January 1985, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, together with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, began an historic capture and release program that would reintroduce moose into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  29 moose in 1985 and 30 in 1986 were captured in Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario and released into the wilderness north of Champion.  Over the past twenty years the moose herd has grown considerably and several hundred moose now call the Champion area their home.

Many visitors come to the Champion area each year hoping to catch a glimpse of these magnificent animals.  Although tracks and other evidence of their presence is commonplace, sighting a moose can be difficult, but it's not impossible.  They are most often seen when you are not looking for them:  they cross the road in front of your vehicle; you round a corner and find one staring you down; or you paddle your canoe around a point in a lake, and there he is, eating his evening meal in the shallows of the bay.

Van Riper State Park has a very nice interactive display about the area moose.  Information about recent moose sightings may often be obtained from local residents and businesses.
